Yoga studios in Los Angeles are as unique as the neighborhoods they’re based in. From a chill space in Venice to a West Hollywood joint that’s got both a resident multi-millionaire hip-hop guru and blow-dry bar, there’s a nearby studio that’s got your (bendy) back.
HOLLYWOOD: SET AND FLOW
This squeaky-clean new studio offers a killer hot yoga class as well as other classes to balance out your fitness, such as a quickie 30-minute battle ropes and cannonball yoga sculpt, which builds lean muscle mass between asanas.
SILVERLAKE: URTH YOGA
There’s a little bit of everything on offer at this friendly neighborhood studio where you can take an early-morning five-dollar session open to all levels, an after-work basics class and three times a week, a special intermediate-advanced class where you’re learning to kick up to handstands on the wall and press up to a bow…well, maybe someday.
WEST HOLLYWOOD: TANTRIS YOGA
Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons’s yoga studio has expansive spaces with infrared heating and sprung wood floors where you can enjoy 60- or 75-minute classes. Or, just settle in for Soulful Sundays, a vegan brunch and lecture by Simmons himself. We’ve personally stopped in for the branded exercise clothes and collection of affordable crystal malas imported from India.
SHERMAN OAKS: BLACK DOG YOGA
Three brightly painted studios are home to the best unheated classes in the Valley, with super-energetic, well-trained teachers leading not just a fast-paced flow but also sound baths, mindfulness instruction and yogic meditations for better sleep.
PASADENA: COREPOWER YOGA
Ever wonder why people buy special towels just for yoga? After one Hot Power Fusion class, in which you’re holding balances and doing core work in a room heated to between 100 and 103 degrees, you’ll never wonder again. Caring teachers, ultra-clean studios and absolutely necessary showers keep you coming back for more, as does the fast detoxing results that heat-slims you down faster than room-temperature classes.
WESTLAKE VILLAGE: YOGAWORKS
This 13,000-foot blond wood studio—the largest of the many YogaWorks in town—means that while you take in the precise instruction, you’ll also feel super zen. And get this: There’s a child care center . Nama-stay in here while Mommy gets her flow on.
SANTA MONICA: THE YOGA COLLECTIVE
Smack in the middle of trendy Rose Avenue, this yoga studio combines all the love-and-light vibe of this beach community along with a tough program of hot yoga that packs in the members. A big plus for maintaining an inward focus: no mirrors!
MARINA DEL REY: YOGAQUA
Deep breath: You got this. Weekend classes held under the sun on the back of a standup paddleboard are the thing here. Classes are 90 minutes—the first 30 are spent learning to navigate the standup paddleboard in the shallow harbor, followed by an hour of slow asanas and stretches on the slightly wobbly board (it’s anchored, so you won’t go sliding too far). Pro tip: Bring a friend to be your personal photographer; your followers are going to want to see this.
